There is no mystery on how email marketing works, but before you continue to read you should understand one important thing:
The people on your email list are real and you need to treat them that way.
More on that later….

How Does Email Marketing Work?
I’ll explain every piece of the email marketing puzzle but here is the general gist of it, you send targeted niche traffic to a squeeze page that offers a free lead magnet.
In order for your niche traffic to get the lead magnet they must enter their email address into your squeeze page.
Your new email subscriber is then sent to a ‘Thank You’ page where he or she receives the lead magnet. After that, you build a relationship with your email subscriber via your email autoresponder, providing value (both free & paid) for years to come.
Or until your subscriber unsubscribes.
The Power Of Your Lead Magnet
Your lead magnet is very important to your email funnel, it’s the only reason people have to enter your email list.
Lead magnets take many shapes and forms, traditionally email marketers offered simple 4 page pdf ebooks but that isn’t converting visitors like it used to.
These days email marketers offer different types of lead magnets like:
- 3 to 6 Day Video Courses
- Software
- Giveaway Contests
Important note: An easy way to create an attractive lead magnet is to use quizzes, I highly recommend you check out this review I did on Interact to see how it works…
The thing to remember here, is to provide a lead bribe that people actually want, you find that out by testing different ones and seeing which ones get you the most leads.
A Focused Squeeze Page
A squeeze page is simply a targeted message offering your lead magnet in exchange for your visitor’s email.
Your squeeze page should have one purpose and one purpose only, to get you fresh new subscribers.
You should limit the options you have on your squeeze page because you don’t want your visitor to link out of your squeeze page without opting in.
Freebie: There are many ways to create squeeze pages, I created a video guide and tutorial that helps you create them for free. You can get that right here…
Directing Leads To a ‘Thank You’ Page
Once your leads subscribe they are redirected to a ‘Thank You’ page, you can do one of two things here, you could sell them on your One Time Offer (OTO) or just give them the lead magnet then and there.
I actually sell something (OTO) on my ‘Thank You’ page and give my new subscribers their lead magnet in the ‘Welcome’ email. This way, I can provide value while profiting on the back-end.
Your ‘Welcome’ Email And Autoresponder
Your ‘Welcome’ email is so important, it is the first message you send to your new subscriber and it’s your first chance to create a connection with him or her.
I usually double-up on the value in my welcome email, not only do I give them the free lead magnet I promised but I also give them something else of value.
This is also where I explain who I am and what they can expect from me in future emails.
Don’t be afraid to show your personality here, your subscribers want to learn about you and what you do.
Providing Value To Your List
You need to constantly keep in touch with your email subscribers and treat them like your friends. I email my list almost everyday, I usually email about new methods, new videos or new posts I’ve created or used.
The emphasis is always on how my email can help my subscriber, this doesn’t mean you should only send freebies, premium products can also help and provide value to your subscribers.
Selling To Your List
Like I already stated, “free content” isn’t and shouldn’t be the only type of value you provide your subscribers. There is lots of value you can promote with products and affiliate offers you believe in.
One of the best tools I use to this day came from another marketer’s email, she explained in a friendly manner the benefits of this tool and I bought it.
The main point here is, don’t be afraid to sell, that being said, don’t burn out your email list either. Everything you email (free or otherwise) should provide value and have a purpose.
The $$ Is In The Value
You often here “the money is in the list”, and yes to an extent this is true. However, I’d like to challenge that notion a bit, your email list is a delivery system for the value you provide your audience.
The value you provide can take many forms, it can be free or paid. You can even send it as a video or a printable, it doesn’t matter as long as your subscriber is better because of it.

So how does email marketing work? It works because of you and the value you provide your niche audience.
If you disagree or want to add to the conversation then let me know in the comments section below.

Hey Ike! I hope it does work. I’m on the creating a sales funnel / selling to your list part. Having a welcome email and indoctrination series has really increased the interaction I’ve received from my people.
Hey Nadalie, thanks for chiming in. and yes, i totally agree
Hey Ike,
Great post!
I love email marketing. Not surprising, as I am a List Grow Strategist.
Recently, I have been working on ways to instantly increase open rates. And I think I have cracked it. Well sort of π Used properly, the little-known secret of email resend will help you instantly and significantly increase your open rates! And itβs incredibly easy to set up. Whether you use MailChimp, MailerLite, AWeber, ConvertKit, InfusionSoft, or another email service provider, most email marketing programs offer the option to send an email to a segment of your list who did not open an email.
The other thing is of course conditioning your list to click on the links in your email. Because if they don’t click you can’t sell!
Best regards,
Pedro
Thank you Pedro for your input.
