Newbie Friendly Blogging Tips You Should Follow

I got another great email from Alex (here is the first one). In just a few short days he took some major steps in the right direction.

He is already putting out content and creating his blog’s foundation. However, he does have some newbie concerns. Below you’ll find his original email with my replies. Read it all and learn what to do if you get stuck in these similar situations:

Newbie Friendly Blogging Tips

Hey Ike

Hope you’re well.

About my site… I did get started, barely. I got the domain and hosting but now I’m kinda regretting the domain as I find it to be to broad and not niche oriented.

  • Ike’s answer: Don’t sweat the small stuff, your content and who it attracts will always be the determining factor. You can always abbreviate your domain when you write about it. My domain is pretty stupid sounding, but I just call my site IMG. Done…

But well, I’ll start working on it. I’ve actually decided to start two sites. One in the weight loss niche and the other in outdoor camping.

I decided this so I can follow both, your advice on going into a proven niche and my passion for camping.

It has taken a lot of time for me to actually write about weigh loss; I do NOT like the subject at all. On the other hand, I know quite a bit about camping (being a hunter and all) so it’s much easier to write about.

  • Ike’s answer: Why did you pick a proven niche that you dislike? why not pick one that you enjoy? When I entered the baby shower niche I knew nothing about it and I was indifferent. However, I pressed forward because at the time I knew there was an opportunity that I could capitalize on. Passion is a shifting thing anyways. After all, I use to have a passion for ninja turtles.

I did some keyword research on camping and found some amazing keywords I could use with high volume and nearly no competition.

Here are the actions I took so far for both sites. What do you think?

1 – Got hosting

2 – Got the domain for the weight loss site

3 – Did some keyword research and decided to write a post on “how to stay motivated to lose weight”

4 – Went on Click Bank and found the product I want to promote

5 – Signed up for Mail chimp

6 – Got a free PLR report to use as a Lead Magnet (I plan to re-write it)

7 – “Designed” the structure of the site using WordPress menu theme options

8 – Reached out to some nutritionists with high Facebook followings to get expert advise to write a post on the “basics of weight loss”

9 – Did some keyword research for the aviation site

10 – Found a great affiliate product to promote

  • Ike’s answer: Awesome on all levels but I do have some concerns. How did you craft your headline? Is it just the keyword or did you also use buzzsumo? Did you out link to experts and tell them about it? Are you actively promoting that new piece of content?
  • About Point 6: As for the lead magnet, don’t create work for yourself if you don’t have to. After you set up your site and optin box, just stick to content creation and promotion.
  • About Point 8: Why should they help you? Offer them something for their help for a better response.

That’s about it for now… I’ve been thinking abut the domain for the camping site but I don’t know if I should make it more general or specific. To sell only the online course to campers or to also sell all kinds of camping goods (amazon affiliate) to outdoors men and women.

  • Ike’s answer: Again, don’t sweat it. I would test both once my site starts getting traffic. There are some great free tools and plugins that can help you split test. Remember, what we care about means shit. We are scientist and we let the data direct our actions.

Thanks,

Alex

Great work on the execution Alex! Remember that your time is your most valuable asset.

What can you do today that will get you closer to your goals?

That’s a question I ask myself BEFORE I write anything down on my daily to-do list. I wish I did that when I was a newbie.

You’re a content marketer and you need to focus on the bigger tasks that will ultimately get more eyeballs on your posts and affiliate offers.

“If you build it, they will come” is bullshit. You gotta promote your content and get rejected from time to time. Just like dating, you gotta get through a lot of “Nos” before you get a “YES”.

I started my new content marketing strategy in late May and I’m astonished with the results for the month of June 2016! Check it out:

Traffic To My Blog In June

Again a great post Ike! Thanks! This Alex guy sounds like a cool man. It’s great you take the time out of your day to help a noob out. We all appreciate it!

  • Hey P! Yea, he’s cool because he is taking steps in the right direction. He started a new site and cranking out content. Much like I’m doing with this site.

All I have to do is repeat the success that I had with my baby shower site with this one.

I know, I know… that niche site is an old site with lots of content and a solid amount of monthly traffic so it’s hard for a newbie to relate with…

On the other hand, IMG isn’t an old site, It’s barely a year old.

I wrote the majority of the content for this site a year ago and I got a little traffic ,but now that I implementing the tips I’m sharing, this site is getting more eyeballs on it each and every day! Above, I added a screenshot of my traffic for this month so far…

You gotta get your content SEO ready THEN promote it….
